A new documentary highlights the climate-driven health and livelihood risks facing women bakers in Kano, with stakeholders urging urgent interventions.

Stakeholders in Nigeria’s climate and environment sector have been urged to devise solutions to the health and economic security challenges women face under worsening heat conditions. The call was made on Saturday in Abuja at the premiere of Yan Gurasa, a 15-minute documentary portraying the struggles of women gurasa bakers in Kano.

The event, organised by the Global Strategic Communications Council (GSCC), concluded the Muryarta Araya Muhalli project, spotlighting women-led climate resilience. OXFAM’s Ifeoluwa Olawumi revealed that 98,000 premature deaths in Nigeria are linked to smoke exposure, mostly affecting women and girls.

Mrs. Oghogho Musa, wife of the Chief of Defence Staff, stressed the need for collective response, greater awareness, and safer business practices for women. GSCC’s Zainab Bala said the campaign focuses on the health toll of climate change on women.

The documentary was presented as evidence for cleaner cooking, workplace cooling, micro-finance, and social protection initiatives.
