Rumours contained in several WhatsApp voice notes alleged that a foreign trader invoked the spirit of Ogun deity on her two trucks of rice after the trucks were allegedly stolen and smuggled into the country.
Panic has gripped parts of Lagos and Ogun States over viral WhatsApp voice notes warning of “cursed rice” allegedly smuggled into Nigeria. The rumours claim a Ghanaian trader invoked the Ogun deity’s wrath on stolen rice trucks, with unverified reports linking several deaths – including a soldier and customs officers – to the consumption of the grains.
The Seme Border Customs Command, through spokesperson Isah Sulaiman, strongly denied the allegations: “This widely circulated claim is entirely false and misleading.” The Service confirmed no such contaminated rice exists in circulation, urging the public to disregard the unfounded scare.
