PDP blames ‘greed, selfishness’ for Governors’ defections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly accused its defecting governors, including the most recent exits of Peter Mbah of Enugu and Douye Diri of Bayelsa, of being motivated by “greed, selfishness, and covetousness,” while insisting the party remains strong and unfazed.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized four of its governors who have defected since the 2023 elections, accusing them of avarice and self-interest. Governors Sheriff Oborevwori, Umo Eno, Peter Mbah, and Douye Diri have all abandoned the party.
PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi attributed the exits to “greed, avarice, and selfishness,” adding, “To the best of my knowledge and that of most Nigerians, you cannot find a compelling reason for a governor… to abandon the party that produced him.”

The party maintained that the defectors would ultimately regret their actions, insisting that its strength lies with the people, not the governors. Southern Zonal Caretaker Chairman Elder Emmanuel Ogidi suggested the governors were being “coerced” by the ruling party.

Despite the loss of governors and key figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the PDP said it is unbothered, focusing instead on its forthcoming national convention in Ibadan, which it hopes will reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
