PDP slams Canadian court over terrorist tag on Nigerian parties

ABUJA – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denounced a Canadian court’s decision classifying Nigeria’s two major political parties, the PDP and ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as terrorist organisations.

Describing the verdict as “misinformed, biased, and lacking evidence,” PDP Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor urged Ottawa to target specific individuals accused of wrongdoing rather than entire parties.

The ruling, upheld by Canada’s Federal Court on June 17, 2025, denied asylum to ex-party member Douglas Egharevba under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Authorities alleged both parties were linked to electoral violence and subversion of democracy.

Former NNPC spokesman Olufemi Soneye warned the decision set a “dangerous precedent” that could threaten political freedoms globally, saying it “blurs the vital line between dissent and danger.”
