‘Peace is back to Rivers’—Wike, Fubara declare after Tinubu’s mediation

The prolonged political crisis in Rivers State appears to have reached a resolution after President Bola Tinubu brokered a truce between warring factions in Abuja late Thursday.

The closed-door meeting, held at the President’s official residence, brought together suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, and other key stakeholders, all of whom agreed to set aside their differences.

In attendance were suspended Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule; Majority Leader Major Jack; APC and PDP state chairmen; former governorship candidate Magnus Abe; federal lawmakers; and senior government officials.

The political turmoil in Rivers had escalated in March when Tinubu suspended Fubara, his deputy, and state assembly members, appointing an administrator to oversee the state.

Speaking after the meeting, both Wike and Fubara struck a conciliatory tone, declaring that peace had been restored.

“We have resolved to work together for the progress of Rivers State,” Fubara said. “Today is a day to thank God.”

Wike echoed the sentiment, emphasizing unity and development.

While details of the agreement remain undisclosed, the public declaration of peace signals a potential end to months of instability. Observers, however, remain cautious, awaiting concrete actions to match the rhetoric.
