Peru’s Congress has ousted President Dina Boluarte over “moral incapacity,” ending her turbulent rule amid crime, corruption probes, and nationwide protests.

Peru’s Congress has voted overwhelmingly to remove President Dina Boluarte from office amid escalating gang violence and political unrest. Lawmakers cited “permanent moral incapacity” as the reason for her impeachment, with 122 of 130 members backing her ouster during a late-night session on Thursday.

Boluarte, one of the world’s least popular leaders with an approval rating of 2-4%, had faced mounting criticism over corruption allegations, scandals, and a surge in violent crime. “At all times I have called for unity,” she said in a televised address after her removal, insisting she had acted in the nation’s interest.

Crowds outside Congress erupted in celebration following the vote, which also saw former allies join the opposition. Congress leader Jose Jeri was sworn in as interim president early Friday, as Peru currently has no vice-president.

Boluarte’s presidency, marked by deadly protests and multiple investigations, ends less than three years after she succeeded Pedro Castillo in 2022.
