Peter Obi says Nigeria’s exclusion from the IMF’s list of Africa’s fastest-growing economies reflects indiscipline, corruption, and poor leadership.
The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has blamed Nigeria’s exclusion from the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) list of Africa’s fastest-growing economies on indiscipline and ineffective leadership.
In a statement on Thursday, Obi described the omission as a wake-up call for Nigerian leaders, urging them to prioritise reforms that would restore economic growth.
The IMF, in its Regional Economic Outlook report for sub-Saharan Africa released on October 17, listed Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Uganda among the continent’s fastest-growing economies, excluding Nigeria.
Obi noted that those countries were not richer than Nigeria in natural resources but had advanced through “discipline, effective leadership, and consistent investment in their people.”
He added that they have focused on education, healthcare, poverty reduction, and fiscal prudence. “Our economy continues to suffer from poor policy choices, corruption, and waste,” Obi lamented.
