Peter Obi has urged Nigeria and the United States to pursue diplomatic solutions following President Donald Trump’s threat of possible military action over alleged religious persecution.
Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has urged Nigeria and the United States to embrace diplomatic engagement following U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments suggesting possible military action against Nigeria over alleged religious persecution.
In a statement on his verified X account on Monday, Obi said the U.S. designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” should alarm all Nigerians. “The recent pronouncement by the US government declaring Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ and indicating possible military action should give every well-meaning Nigerian serious concern,” he wrote.
He described the security situation as “unprecedented,” citing Amnesty International’s figure of over 10,000 deaths since May 2023. Obi accused the APC-led government of lacking “competence, commitment, and patriotism” to address insecurity.
While condemning the killings, Obi cautioned against U.S. military involvement, urging both nations to maintain their strategic partnership through “constructive diplomatic engagement.”
