Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has clarified his past interaction with late Head of State General Sani Abacha, asserting it was non-political and strictly professional. In a statement posted Wednesday on X, Obi said he had never met Abacha until he was co-opted into a task force on port decongestion, formed in response to delays affecting traders and importers.

“Our meeting with him was borne out of collective concern as traders and importers over the prolonged delays in clearing goods at the ports. We approached him not as political actors, but as concerned citizens seeking pragmatic solutions,” Obi stated.

He said the group aimed to improve port efficiency and bolster the economy. To support his account, Obi shared a letter confirming his appointment to the task force.

“This clarification is offered in the interest of truth, to reaffirm that our actions were driven solely by a sense of civic duty and not political ambition,” he added.
