Peter Obi speaks on alleged defection from Labour Party

“I have never discussed leaving the Labour Party with anyone.”

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has denied claims of his planned defection from the party. Speaking at the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, April 9, Obi stated, “I have never discussed leaving the Labour Party with anyone.” He emphasized that any decision about his political future would involve consultation with party stakeholders.

His comments come amid internal tensions and rumours fueled by the ongoing leadership crisis. The Supreme Court recently nullified the Court of Appeal’s decision on Julius Abure’s chairmanship, calling party leadership an internal affair. Despite this, Abure continues to act as chairman, sparking controversy.

Obi’s public assurance aims to maintain unity and stability within the party. “My commitment to the Labour Party and its ideals remains firm,” he said, easing fears of internal division.
