Manila is negotiating with New Delhi to expand its BrahMos missile acquisition program, following the delivery of the first shore-based batteries last April. In January 2022, India and the Philippines signed a $375 million contract for three BrahMos missile batteries designed to deter Chinese naval aggression in the South China Sea.

The BrahMos system, a land-based anti-ship missile, comes with mobile launchers, radar, command-and-control units, logistics support, and training for Philippine personnel. “These systems will help the Philippines… and might prove decisive if there is any Chinese military attack directed against Taiwan,” experts say.

The Philippines’ defense posture also includes U.S.-supplied Typhon missiles capable of launching Tomahawk and SM-6 missiles. India’s deal marks its first major BrahMos export, highlighting its strategic role in strengthening ASEAN security and countering China’s ambitions in the Indo-Pacific.
