Tensions escalated after Lewandowski, 36, declared on Sunday that he would not play for Poland while Probierz remained in charge.
Poland head coach Michal Probierz has resigned amid a public feud with star striker Robert Lewandowski, the Polish Football Federation (PZPN) announced Thursday.
“I have come to the conclusion that in the current situation the best decision for the good of the national team will be my resignation from the position of selector,” said Probierz.
Tensions escalated after Lewandowski, 36, declared on Sunday that he would not play for Poland while Probierz remained in charge. The Barcelona striker was reportedly upset after being stripped of the captain’s armband.
“Taking into account the circumstances and a loss of trust in the coach, I have decided to resign from playing for the Poland national team for as long as he remains in charge,” Lewandowski stated on social media.
Probierz took over in September 2023, leading Poland to Euro 2024 where they exited in the group stage. He recorded nine wins, five draws, and seven losses in 21 matches.
