The Nigeria Police Force has identified and summoned officers caught on video demanding ₦5,000 or fuel from motorists lacking ECMR proof.

The Nigeria Police Force has summoned a group of officers identified in a viral video demanding a ₦5,000 bribe or five litres of fuel from motorists.

The video, which surfaced online on Monday, shows a policeman along the Benin Bypass confronting travellers for failing to provide proof of Electronic Central Motor Registry (ECMR).

The officer is heard asking, “What do you want us to do?” and then demanding fuel, saying, “We’ll go and buy it, that’s 5k.”

Reacting to public outrage, Force PRO Olumuyiwa Adejobi condemned the conduct in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “This action is utterly condemned. The officers have been identified and summoned to Force Headquarters for necessary action.

“We will not tolerate any act of indiscipline or unprofessionalism. We will update the public on our decisions as soon as possible. Thanks.”

The incident has reignited concerns about extortion and misconduct by law enforcement personnel despite previous directives.
