The Nigeria Police Force has debunked claims that activist Omoyele Sowore was re-arrested after being granted bail, explaining that his transfer to prison was part of the bail process.
The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed reports that human rights activist Omoyele Sowore was re-arrested after being granted bail. Earlier accounts claimed that Sowore, who was detained for organising the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest, was taken into custody again within the courtroom shortly after his release.
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, described the report as false, stating that it was “procedurally incorrect.”
“Story that he was arrested on a fresh charge and whisked away to Kuje Prison to be arranged on Monday is procedurally incorrect,” Hundeyin said. “No prison will accept such a person without a remand warrant duly issued by a competent court.”
He clarified that Sowore was only taken to prison as directed by the court pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions.
