“Any officer that fails the examination three times will be retired at that level for obvious incompetence,” Argungu said.

The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Hashimu Argungu, says any officer who fails the compulsory promotion examination three times will be retired from service.

Argungu made the declaration on Monday, September 29, 2025, during the promotion examination for 30 senior police officers at the PSC headquarters in Abuja.

According to PSC spokesman Ikechukwu Ani, the examination has become a new prerequisite for career progression in the Force. Participants included one Assistant Inspector General, two Commissioners, eleven Deputy Commissioners, and sixteen Assistant Commissioners of Police.

“Any officer that fails the examination three times will be retired at that level for obvious incompetence,” Argungu warned, stressing that modern policing requires skill, knowledge, and continuous professional development.

He described the exams as a long overdue reform designed to restore professionalism.

The exercise was supervised by PSC commissioners, including retired Justices Paul Adamu Galumje and Christine Ladi Dabup.
