Heavily armed police officers sealed off the Kuje Magistrate Court in Abuja, preventing lawyers and journalists from accessing the premises and firing teargas canisters, just hours before human rights activist Omoyele Sowore was expected to perfect his bail conditions
Heavily armed police officers barricaded the entrance to the Kuje Magistrate Court on Monday, sparking tension and barring journalists and lawyers from accessing the premises.
The security operatives, backed by Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), arrived early and sealed off all access points without providing a reason for the severe restriction. The action precedes the expected appearance of human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, who was due to be granted bail after perfecting his conditions following his re-arrest on Friday, October 24.
The police also fired teargas canisters within the court premises to disperse lawyers and Sowore’s associates who had gathered in solidarity. Lawyers and members of the press, in the court for various cases, were turned back, leading to altercations and confusion as they insisted on performing their legitimate duties.
Efforts to contact the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, for comment were unsuccessful. The police action has led to heightened anxiety in the area, with reports of harassment against residents and passers-by.
