Police warn pro-Kanu protesters against entering restricted zones, citing a court order.
The Nigeria Police Force has warned organisers of the planned #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest against staging any demonstration within the Presidential Villa or other restricted areas in Abuja.
Rights activist Omoyele Sowore is reportedly mobilising protesters for a march to Aso Rock on Monday, October 20, to demand the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu. The movement is said to have the backing of several opposition figures nationwide.
However, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/2202/2025, on Friday restrained the organisers from protesting around the Presidential Villa, National Assembly Complex, Force Headquarters, Court of Appeal, Eagle Square and Shehu Shagari Way.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, warned that “anyone who violates the order will be arrested and prosecuted.”
He stressed that while the Police “recognizes and respects the rights of citizens to peaceful assembly,” such rights must be exercised within legal boundaries.
