Polls show Gen Z turning away from Democrats

Polls show Gen Z voters shifting toward conservatism, with Trump and pandemic-era experiences driving the trend.

A growing number of young Americans are embracing conservative politics, reversing decades of Democratic dominance among youth voters. “It’s starting to feel cool to be a conservative now,” said 19-year-old Kieran Laffey, a political science student at George Washington University.

A Yale Youth Poll this year found voters aged 18-21 favored Republicans by nearly 12 points, while those 22-29 leaned Democratic by six points. Analysts cite the pandemic, economic instability, and social media as shaping younger Gen Z views. “You can just see blatant misinformation and it’s not called out anymore,” said Ryan Gaire, president of the College Democrats at Binghamton University.

Former Iowa lawmaker Joe Mitchell credited President Trump for making conservatism appealing. “We broke through the culture this election like we never have before,” he said.

Catalist data shows Democratic support among under-30 voters fell from 61% in 2020 to 55% in 2024, reflecting broader registration declines.
