Prof. Bugaje also called on the Federal Government to revise the TETFund allocation formula to benefit polytechnics more.
The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has revealed that Nigerian polytechnics now employ more doctorate degree holders than universities, calling for increased funding to match their academic growth. Prof. Idris Bugaje, NBTE Executive Secretary, disclosed that some polytechnic departments, like Kaduna Polytechnic’s Technical Education unit, boast up to 40 PhD holders. He urged the Federal Government to revise TETFund’s 2:1:1 allocation formula (favoring universities) to ensure parity for polytechnics.
“When I took over Kaduna Polytechnic in 2017, I met a department with 40 PhD holders… We have the capacity,” Bugaje told The Guardian. He added that NBTE now mandates “every polytechnic graduate to have a second skills certificate” to boost global employability.
