Pope Leo XIV will visit Lebanon and Turkey next month, marking his first foreign trip, with prayers planned at the Beirut port blast site and the Council of Nicaea anniversary in Turkey.
Pope Leo XIV will embark on his first foreign trip from November 27 to December 2, visiting Lebanon and Turkey. The Vatican said the Pope will pray at the site of the 2020 Beirut port explosion that killed more than 200 people and caused massive destruction.
Leo will also attend events in Turkey marking the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea and meet Orthodox leader Patriarch Bartholomew I. He is scheduled to pray at Istanbul’s Armenian Apostolic Cathedral but will skip visits to Lebanon’s war-hit south and Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia.
The trip continues Pope Francis’ planned visit to both nations, which he could not complete before his death earlier this year.
