VATICAN CITY — Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, 69, has been elected the new pope, taking the name Leo XIV.

His election followed the symbolic white smoke from the Sistine Chapel, confirming a two-thirds majority among the 133 voting cardinals. Crowds in St. Peter’s Square cheered, waving flags and chanting, “Viva il Papa!”

Appearing on the Vatican balcony for the first time in papal white, Leo XIV offered his blessing and first words: “Peace be with you all,” delivered in Italian and Spanish. He spoke of unity, building bridges, and staying “close to those who suffered.”

Born in Chicago and later naturalized in Peru, Leo XIV becomes the first American and Peruvian to hold the papacy. Known for his pastoral approach, he is seen as aligned with Pope Francis, who made him a cardinal in 2023.

His election comes amid strained Vatican-U.S. relations. Months before his death, Francis condemned U.S. immigration policies. Then-Cardinal Leo XIV echoed him, stating, “JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others.”

Observers expect him to continue Francis’ emphasis on inclusivity and environmental stewardship.
