Ange Postecoglou has been sacked by Tottenham just 16 days after winning the Europa League, despite ending the club’s 17-year wait for silverware.

Ange Postecoglou has been sacked as Tottenham manager just 16 days after leading the club to Europa League victory. Spurs beat Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao to secure their first major trophy in 17 years, but a dismal league campaign saw them finish 17th with 22 losses in 38 matches.

Despite assuring fans that “season three is better than season two” during a victory parade, the 59-year-old’s reign ended exactly two years after his appointment from Celtic.

Spurs said Postecoglou’s triumph was “one of the club’s greatest moments,” but added they could not base their decision “on emotions aligned to this triumph.”

Brentford’s Thomas Frank is reportedly the leading candidate to replace him, with Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva, Oliver Glasner, and former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino also being considered.

Postecoglou said, “That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work… The opportunity to lead one of England’s historic football clubs… will live with me for a lifetime.”
