A sudden power outage disrupted Big Brother Naija’s live broadcast, sparking fan outrage and renewed criticism of Nigeria’s electricity sector.

Millions of viewers of the Big Brother Naija reality show were left stunned on Friday after its broadcast was abruptly cut off following a sudden power outage.

The organisers confirmed the disruption in a notice posted on Instagram, assuring that “the housemates are safe and sound” and adding that the break was “due to a power issue” while technicians worked to restore service.

As of press time, the show was yet to return live, with the DStv channel replaying old scenes. The blackout triggered a storm of reactions on social media, with fans trending “Ilupeju” on X, jokingly threatening to storm the Lagos venue.

One user, @Julietogoo36, wrote: “Na small thing dey vex me.. on my way to Ilupeju. #BBNaija better make sure nothing happen to my Sultana.”

The incident comes as Nigeria continues to battle chronic electricity challenges, despite government claims of ₦2 trillion in subsidies and recent tariff hikes.
