Powerful South-East politicians, businessmen working against Kanu’s freedom — ZLP Chairman

ZLP chairman Dan Iwuanyanwu alleged that South-East elites are backing Nnamdi Kanu’s continued detention for fear of losing political influence, as protests led by Omoyele Sowore intensify in Abuja demanding his release.

The National Chairman of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Dan Iwuanyanwu, has alleged that some powerful politicians and businessmen in the South-East are secretly supporting the continued detention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to protect their political interests.

Speaking on Channels Television on Monday, Iwuanyanwu said many of these figures are unsettled by Kanu’s influence, which he described as “organic and unmatched.”

“There are some top businessmen who are involved in businesses in Abuja, oil and all that,” he said. “There are some top politicians who are of the view – and which is correct – that if Nnamdi Kanu comes today, there are people whose political career will come to an end permanently without him saying a word.”

His remarks come amid renewed protests in Abuja demanding Kanu’s release. Human rights activist and AAC presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, who joined the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow demonstrations, warned that the government’s continued detention of Kanu could “soon get out of hand.”

Sowore accused security operatives of using teargas on protesters, insisting, “We are not threatening violence… we all deserve a right to be citizens.”
