“We are very concerned… Incidents of this nature have no place in our game… we will work closely… to establish the facts and ensure the appropriate action is taken.”

The Premier League has confirmed a report of racial abuse directed at Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo during Friday’s 4-2 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

Play was halted in the first half when referee Anthony Taylor spoke to both managers and captains after the alleged abuse was reported. The match resumed shortly after, but the Premier League issued a strong condemnation.

“Tonight’s match… was temporarily paused… after a report of discriminatory abuse… The incident at Anfield will now be fully investigated… Racism has no place in our game, or anywhere in society,” the statement read.

The Football Association added: “We are very concerned… Incidents of this nature have no place in our game… we will work closely… to establish the facts and ensure the appropriate action is taken.”

TalkSPORT’s Adrian Durham said: “If that racist can be identified… they have to be banned… and there have to be criminal proceedings.”

Semenyo later scored twice to level the game before Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah secured Liverpool’s victory.
