MAKURDI — The Federal Government has blamed Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia for allegedly ignoring a critical security report that could have prevented last week’s deadly herdsmen attack in Yelewata, which left over 100 residents dead.
According to presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare, the document—prepared by retired military generals—was handed to Mr Alia nearly two years ago but remained unimplemented.
“League of Retired Generals from Benue State 18 months ago handed a security brief to Governor Hycent (sic) Alia,” Dare stated Tuesday. “This is the time to dust up that document.”
The attackers struck between late Friday and early Saturday, burning homes and killing civilians, including women and children. President Tinubu, who condemned the attack over 24 hours later, is scheduled to visit Benue on Wednesday.
Governor Alia’s spokesperson, Tersoo Kula, said he would verify the allegations before responding.
Dare claimed politicians had converged in Makurdi ahead of the visit, saying, “A renewed commitment to stopping the bloodletting seems on hand.”
