Onanuga accused Obi of breaking past promises, including leaving APGA despite pledging loyalty.
The Presidency has strongly criticised Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his recent vow to serve only one four-year term if elected president. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, described Obi’s statement as hypocritical and questioned his credibility.
“Peter Obi, the liar, is exposed again,” Onanuga wrote on X. “You’re neither a Mandela nor a Lincoln or a Kennedy… Why didn’t you walk away after only one term as governor?”
Onanuga accused Obi of breaking past promises, including leaving APGA despite pledging loyalty. He argued Obi’s history shows a pattern of dishonesty, adding, “You have broken previous promises and usually lie with reckless abandon.”
Obi had earlier reaffirmed his one-term pledge, citing the examples of Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela as leaders who made impactful change within short tenures.
The Presidency dismissed this comparison and questioned Obi’s ability to govern Nigeria effectively within four years.
