Tinubu approved a reviewed list of 175 convicts for pardon and sentence reduction to ensure fairness and due process.

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has explained that President Bola Tinubu reviewed the initial list of 175 convicts considered for presidential pardon to ensure that only those who met the legal and procedural requirements benefited.

Fagbemi said the final list, now approved by the President, reflects “fairness, justice, and the spirit of the exercise.” He added that some names were delisted while others had their sentences reduced.

Among the 86 convicts whose punishments were reviewed was Maryam Sanda, whose death sentence was reduced to 12 years’ imprisonment “on compassionate grounds.”

Other beneficiaries include convicts whose life sentences were reduced for offences such as manslaughter, drug trafficking, and armed robbery.

Fagbemi said the review demonstrated the government’s effort to “balance justice with compassion” and ensure future pardons comply with due process and public expectations.
