A Project Runway contestant, Arthur Folasa “Afa” Ah Loo, 39, was fatally shot during an anti-Trump “No Kings” rally in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Saturday.
According to police, a man identified as Arturo Gamboa, 24, allegedly brandished a rifle and charged toward the crowd. Peacekeepers confronted him and ordered him to drop the weapon. When he refused and raised it in a firing stance, a peacekeeper fired, hitting both Gamboa and Ah Loo.
Ah Loo, a Samoan-born fashion designer and new U.S. citizen, was attending the protest with friends. He died later at a hospital.
“He believed that everyone was deserving of basic human rights,” said Utah Rep. Verona Mauga.
Police arrested Gamboa on a murder charge and are investigating the motive. The peacekeeper’s actions are also under review.
Ah Loo, who appeared on Project Runway Season 17, is survived by his wife and two young children. He was known for celebrating Pacific Islander culture.
