Protester Declan Ihekaire, arrested in Lagos during a #FreeNnamdiKanuNow demonstration, alleges that a police commander threatened his life and that police have refused to return his N500,000 necklace and megaphone, despite being released after the Commissioner of Police intervened.
A Lagos protester, Declan Ihekaire, arrested during a #FreeNnamdiKanuNow demonstration, claims the police have yet to return a N500,000 necklace and his megaphone following his release. Ihekaire, in an interview, recounted a dramatic encounter where MOPOL 20 Commander, ACP Idris, allegedly ordered his removal from a police van, threatened his life, and made ethnically motivated remarks after noticing his participation in the Lagos protest. Ihekaire quoted the ACP saying, “He said, remove his handcuff, let him start his protest. I will kill him right now.”
The situation was reportedly diffused by the intervention of the Area G commander and a phone call from the Commissioner of Police, who subsequently ordered that his tightly-applied handcuffs be removed and that he be given “VIP treatment.” Despite this, Ihekaire lamented the pain in his hand and demanded the return of his seized belongings.
