Psychiatric evaluation now mandatory for one-way drivers in Lagos

The Lagos State Government has mandated psychiatric evaluations for 18 motorists apprehended for driving against traffic, a violation known locally as “one-way” driving. The order, announced by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), is part of a broader initiative to improve road discipline and public safety.

The offenders, described as having shown “brazen and willful” disregard for traffic laws, will also face prosecution. LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the move aligns with global traffic psychology practices. “The enforcement of psychiatric assessments is not intended to stigmatise or punish. Rather, it is a necessary intervention designed to protect the general motoring public from individuals who exhibit reckless disregard for human life and lawful order,” he stated.

Despite continued awareness campaigns, one-way driving remains common, often causing accidents and congestion. Bakare-Oki emphasized, “This measure is more than just a traffic enforcement initiative. It is a moral and civic imperative.” LASTMA urged all drivers to follow regulations and support safer roads.
