Russia has tested its nuclear-powered underwater drone, “Poseidon,” days after launching another advanced missile, escalating tensions with Washington.
Russia has successfully tested a nuclear-capable, nuclear-powered underwater drone named Poseidon, President Vladimir Putin announced on Wednesday. The move comes just days after the Kremlin conducted another test of its Burevestnik cruise missile, which Putin said has an “unlimited range.”
“Yesterday, another test was conducted for another prospective system the unmanned underwater device ‘Poseidon,’ also equipped with a nuclear power unit,” Putin said during a visit to a military hospital. He claimed there was “no way to intercept” the device, which can reach any continent and dive deeper than conventional submarines.
According to state-run TASS, Poseidon can travel over one kilometer deep and reach speeds of up to 70 knots while carrying a nuclear warhead of up to two megatons.
U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Russia’s tests, urging Putin to “get the war [in Ukraine] ended” instead of “testing missiles.”
