The ceasefire coincides with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, which mark the end of World War II.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a temporary ceasefire in the war in Ukraine, set to last from May 8 to May 11, coinciding with Russia’s Victory Day commemorations. The Kremlin justified the ceasefire on humanitarian grounds.

The statement added that Russia expects Ukraine to follow suit: “Russia believes that the Ukrainian side should follow this example. In the event of violations of the ceasefire by the Ukrainian side, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation will give an adequate and effective response.”

The ceasefire announcement comes amid ongoing efforts for peace talks, with the US actively trying to mediate between both sides.
