Atletico Madrid handed Real Madrid their first defeat of the season with a 5-2 victory in a dramatic derby clash at the RiyadhAir Metropolitano.
Real Madrid’s unbeaten start to the season ended on Sunday as Atletico Madrid sealed a resounding 5-2 win in a fiery derby at the RiyadhAir Metropolitano.
Robin Le Normand opened the scoring for Atleti before Kylian Mbappe equalised and Arda Guler put Madrid ahead. However, Alexander Sorloth levelled before halftime to restore balance.
Minutes after the restart, Atletico regained the lead when Julian Alvarez converted from the penalty spot after Guler fouled Nicolas Gonzalez. Alvarez struck again with a stunning free-kick before Antoine Griezmann added a late fifth in stoppage time.
Despite flashes of brilliance from Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, Carlo Ancelotti’s side were undone by poor defending and Atleti’s sharp finishing.
“It was a dismal 90 minutes for Real Madrid,” Spanish media reported, while Atletico hailed the victory as a statement performance.
Real Madrid remain top of La Liga but now face pressure, while Atletico rise closer in the standings after a statement derby win.
