A new report by TheCable reveals that online networks linked to IPOB significantly amplified global claims of a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria, intertwining separatist, religious, and international political narratives.
An open-source intelligence analysis by TheCable has uncovered that social media networks affiliated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) were instrumental in amplifying claims of a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.
The report, based on data from X (formerly Twitter) between January 1 and October 1, 2025, recorded over 165,000 mentions of the topic, reaching an estimated 2.83 billion users — more than twelve times Nigeria’s population. Prominent hashtags included #ChristianGenocide, #LaraLogan, #TruthNigeria, and #BiafraExitNow.
Confidence MacHarry, Senior Analyst at SBM Intelligence, said the narrative “was initiated by IPOB as far back as 2016.” The analysis found that accounts supporting IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu were among the most active in spreading the claims online.
TheCable report also linked the campaign’s global traction to international political interests, noting that U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, who has called for sanctions against Nigeria, received over $1.8 billion in donations from pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC.
Meanwhile, the debate reignited locally after the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) rejected comments by presidential aide Daniel Bwala, accusing him of misrepresenting its stance on the issue.
