A new national survey shows that only 51 percent of Nigerian households have access to electricity.
Only 51 percent of Nigerian households have access to electricity, according to the 2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS).
The survey, conducted by the National Population Commission (NPC) with support from USAID, UNICEF, UNFPA, the Gates Foundation, and the Global Fund, is the sixth of its kind since 1990.
According to the NDHS, 98 percent of households use clean fuels or technologies for lighting, such as electricity, solar lanterns, rechargeable flashlights, or battery-powered lamps.
However, just 22 percent use clean fuels for cooking, and only 7 percent for space heating — with access to clean energy much higher in urban areas (42%) than rural (5%).
The report highlights persistent energy poverty and limited clean fuel adoption despite growing investments in the sector.
