Reps say their intervention aims to protect strategic national assets from union actions with economic sabotage undertones.

The House of Representatives has vowed to protect strategic national investments from what it described as adversarial unionism capable of undermining economic stability.

This followed a motion of urgent national importance moved by Alhassan Doguwa (APC, Kano) and seconded by Abdussamad Dasuki (PDP, Sokoto) over the recent strike by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) at the Dangote Refinery, Lagos.

The strike disrupted operations at the $20 billion facility, the largest single-train refinery in the world.

Doguwa said, “Note that the industrial action led to a disruption in Nigeria’s crude oil production, with a reported daily loss of approximately 200,000 barrels over three days.”

He urged compliance with the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) Act, stressing that employment in the zone should be governed by NEPZA rules.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu referred the motion to relevant committees for further legislative action.
