The act was against the provisions of the Universities Miscellaneous Provisions Amendment Act 2003
The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has invited the Minister of Education, Dr Morufu Tunji Alausa, to address allegations of arbitrary dismissals of university vice-chancellors and the dissolution of governing councils.
Committee Chairman, Rep. Abubakar Fulata (APC–Jigawa), announced the invitation during a session in Abuja, stating that the committee received several petitions concerning leadership instability in federal universities. Institutions affected include Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri; Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka; and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Fulata warned that “such uncertainties posed a great danger to the sector,” potentially causing “unnecessary disharmony among university officials,” and expressed concern over breaches of relevant laws.
Prof. Abubakar Kari, speaking on behalf of the University of Abuja staff, cited the unexpected removal of Prof. Aisha Maikudi as vice-chancellor and the dissolution of the council on February 6, 2025. He said the move violated the Universities Miscellaneous Provisions Amendment Act 2003, which outlines procedures for removing a VC.
