The petition cited the state governments’ alleged failure to address spiraling insecurity.
The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has summoned Governors Hyacinth Alia of Benue and Dauda Lawal of Zamfara over worsening insecurity in their states.
A statement on Friday by the committee’s Head of Media, Chooks Oko, said the summons—set for May 8—also applies to the state Assemblies.
The committee is acting on a petition by a civil rights group, Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law, which urged the House to take over the constitutional functions of both Assemblies.
The petition cited the state governments’ alleged failure to address spiraling insecurity. Committee Chairman Mike Etaba, who signed the summons, said, “Ours is to ensure that the rule of law is upheld at all times.”
He added, “The parties have a wonderful opportunity to state their cases clearly so that Nigerians can know what is going on. Anarchy would never be given any space in our polity.”
The hearing is expected to be a critical test of state accountability and federal oversight.
