59-year-old Dr. Julie Gard Schnuelle was allegedly killed by suspect Harold Rashad Dabney III, 28, who is accused of stealing her truck after taking her life.

A retired Auburn University professor was killed while walking her dog in Kiesel Park, Auburn, Ala., on Saturday, Sept. 6, police confirmed.

Authorities identified the victim as Dr. Julie Gard Schnuelle, 59, who was found dead in a wooded area of the park. She retired from Auburn in 2021 after serving as a professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences.

Police announced the arrest of Harold Rashad Dabney III, who has been charged with capital murder. He is also accused of stealing Schnuelle’s red Ford F-150, which was later recovered. It is unclear whether Dabney has entered a plea or retained legal counsel.

“She was a force,” former student Destinee Bearden Patterson told AL.com. “She was only a little bit over 5-foot-2 … such a bright, bright light, just an all-around wonderful human being that is going to be missed terribly.”
