Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero was withdrawn from the starting lineup minutes before Sunday’s Premier League clash with Aston Villa after picking up a problem during the warm-up.
Spurs confirmed the defender’s absence in a brief statement, announcing Kevin Danso as his replacement. Micky van de Ven was named captain for the game in north London.
Romero, who has played every minute of Tottenham’s seven league games this season, had recently returned from international duty with Argentina.
His withdrawal means Danso makes his first Premier League start of the campaign, having featured seven times in all competitions so far.
Manager Thomas Frank also replaced Destiny Udogie with Djed Spence, explaining before kick-off that the full-back had “a minor irritation in his knee” after returning from international duty.
“He won’t be out for long,” Frank told Sky Sports.
Tottenham’s lineup included Vicario, Porro, Danso, Van de Ven, Spence, Bentancur, Palhinha, Kudus, Simons, Odobert, and Tel.
