Wayne Rooney says Manchester United have “lost their soul” and doubts manager Ruben Amorim can reverse their poor form.

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has questioned the direction of the club, saying he has “no faith” in manager Ruben Amorim’s ability to halt their alarming decline. United’s 3-1 defeat at Brentford on Saturday left them 14th in the Premier League, with Amorim collecting just 34 points from 33 league games.

“I just don’t know what’s going on,” the 39-year-old told his BBC podcast. “Ruben Amorim is my age, he’s still a young manager and I’m sure he’s got a massive future, but what’s going on at Man Utd, this is not Man Utd… I’ve got no faith in it.”

Rooney, the club’s all-time top scorer, lamented a lack of fight and desire. “I don’t see players fighting, I don’t see character,” he said. “The soul has gone from the club. It needs a new engine, a new lease of life.”

United spent heavily this summer but remain winless in consecutive league matches for over a year.
