An impostor using AI technology to mimic Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s voice and writing style contacted multiple high-ranking officials, including foreign ministers, a U.S. governor, and a member of Congress, according to a State Department cable obtained by The Washington Post. The individual used Signal and text messages to reach targets, employing a display name resembling Rubio’s email. “The actor left voicemails on Signal for at least two targeted individuals and in one instance, sent a text message inviting the individual to communicate on Signal,” the cable said. Authorities believe the goal was “gaining access to information or accounts.” The State Department vowed to “carry out a thorough investigation and continue to implement safeguards.” Officials did not reveal message contents or names of those targeted. In a related incident, someone impersonated White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles in May, prompting an FBI probe. Trump said Wiles is “an amazing woman” who “can handle it.”
