Russia has condemned the United States for using “excessive military force” in its Caribbean anti-drug campaign and voiced renewed support for Venezuela’s leadership.

Russia’s foreign ministry on Saturday accused the United States of deploying “excessive military force” in the Caribbean under the guise of anti-drug operations. Foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on the ministry’s website that such actions violate both U.S. law and international norms.

A U.S. campaign in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, aimed at curbing drug trafficking, has reportedly targeted 14 vessels and left 61 people dead. Washington has also expanded its regional presence, deploying fighter jets, warships, and thousands of troops.

Moscow framed the move as an act of aggression, reiterating support for Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. “Russia confirms our firm support for the Venezuelan leadership in defending its national sovereignty,” Zakharova said.

The statement follows a May meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Maduro, where both leaders signed a strategic partnership agreement amid rising tensions with the West. Maduro has accused the U.S. of plotting to remove him from power.
