Russian strikes hit Ukrainian city shortly after Washington summit

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote on X: “While hard work to advance peace was underway in Washington, D.C. Moscow continued to do the opposite of peace: more strikes and destruction.

Russia struck the central Ukrainian city of Kremenchuk overnight, unleashing its heaviest bombardment in August, just hours after peace talks concluded in Washington. A thick column of smoke hovered over the city, underscoring the scale of destruction .

The Ukrainian air force reported that Moscow deployed 270 drones and 10 missiles, downing 230 but still managing to hit 16 sites. Nearly 1,500 households were left without electricity in the Poltava region, though authorities say there were no immediate casualties .

“While hard work to advance peace was underway in Washington, D.C. Moscow continued to do the opposite of peace: more strikes and destruction,” wrote Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on X . Kremenchuk Mayor Vitalii Maletskyi added sharply: “Once again, the world has seen that Putin does not want peace — he wants to destroy Ukraine.”
