The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia has declared Thursday, June 26, 2025, as the first day of Muharram, marking the beginning of the Islamic year 1447 AH. This follows confirmed sightings of the crescent moon on Wednesday evening, Dhul Hijjah 29.
The announcement was shared by the Saudi Press Agency and @HaramainInfo, the official X account of the Two Holy Mosques. The court offered prayers for King Salman, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and called for unity among Muslims globally.
In Nigeria, the National Moonsighting Committee confirmed the same date, with the Sultan of Sokoto announcing the sighting and officially declaring Thursday as the start of the Hijri year.
Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram and a significant date in Islam, will fall on Saturday, July 5. Muslims observe the day through fasting and reflection, commemorating the salvation of Prophet Musa.
