The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has plunged into crisis following disputed appointments into its National Working Committee (NWC).

Last week, the party’s national publicity secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, announced the appointment of Senator Ugochukwu Uba, Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar, and Mr. Hussani Ado Bello to key NWC positions.

However, the party’s national chairman, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, denied any such appointments occurred, calling the reports “false, unauthorized.”

Gabam, through deputy national secretary Muhammad Biu, insisted no NWC meeting was held to approve the appointments. But national secretary Olu Agunloye countered, stating that 11 of 12 NWC members met and eight voted in favour.

Agunloye accused Gabam and two others of colluding with ex-Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai to impose personal interests, claiming “Gabam and two others who lost out are throwing tantrums together with El-Rufai who amounts to nothing at his ward.”

Agunloye has since informed INEC of the appointments in an official letter dated May 16.

The crisis now mirrors internal divisions in the PDP and Labour Party.
