The U.S. Senate has confirmed Peter Hoekstra as ambassador to Canada, amid strained relations and controversial tariffs under President Trump.

The U.S. Senate has confirmed Peter Hoekstra as ambassador to Canada in a 60-37 vote, amid one of the most strained periods in Canada-U.S. relations. His appointment follows President Donald Trump’s imposition of sweeping tariffs on Canadian goods and controversial remarks suggesting Canada should become America’s 51st state.

Despite concerns among Democratic lawmakers, Hoekstra’s confirmation process faced little resistance. “I do have a special appreciation for Canada as a neighbor,” he told senators. In response to Sen. Christopher Coons, Hoekstra affirmed, “Canada is a sovereign state,” though he declined to address Trump’s annexation comments.

Referencing his Michigan roots, Hoekstra emphasized shared economic interests: “My home state is connected to Canada by four and soon five bridge crossings.” He pledged to strengthen cooperation.

Canada remains the U.S.’s top trading partner. However, Trump’s 25% blanket tariffs—excluding a 10% on energy—have escalated tensions, especially affecting Canada’s auto exports.
