The Senate says it has received 61 formal requests for state creation but will only recommend approvals after a thorough review, public hearings, and consideration of demographic, geographic, and historical data.

The Senate says it has received 61 requests for state creation and will subject them to a thorough, transparent process before any recommendations are made.

Senate Spokesman Yemi Adaramodu disclosed this in Ilawe-Ekiti, stressing that the National Assembly would prioritize national interest over personal or sectional agendas.

“So far, the Senate has received about 61 requests for state creation… We will collate them, and the Constitutional Review Committee will assess and filter them before presenting a report,” he said.

Adaramodu explained that public hearings will allow supporters and opponents to present their arguments, adding that demographic, geographic, and historical data will be audited.

“No state has been recommended for creation. Until due process is completed, we cannot make such decisions,” he noted.

He urged Nigerians, including traditional rulers, professionals, youth, women, and diaspora groups, to participate in the constitutional review process to ensure it reflects the collective will of the people.
