Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has launched Nigeria’s first constituency-based electric vehicle empowerment scheme to promote green innovation and sustainable livelihoods in Kogi Central.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has launched Nigeria’s first constituency electric vehicle empowerment scheme, distributing locally assembled electric vehicles to more than 100 beneficiaries in Kogi Central Senatorial District.

The initiative, part of her annual constituency programme, marks a major step toward integrating sustainability and technology into grassroots empowerment.

In a statement on Friday, the senator’s Media Office described the project as part of her “ritual of giving back, but this time, with a futuristic twist that promotes sustainability, innovation, and self-reliance.”

Renewable energy expert Udensi Bernard, who is collaborating on the project, said the idea began when Akpoti-Uduaghan visited his office two weeks ago. “She came straight to the point and said, ‘I want to carry out my yearly empowerment, but this time, I want to empower my people with electric vehicles,’” Bernard recalled.

Production and assembly of the vehicles began immediately in Nigeria using local materials and labour. The models will be distributed mainly to women, farmers, and small business owners.

According to Bernard, the initiative offers “long-term economic and environmental gains” through lower fuel costs, reduced emissions, and improved access to markets, positioning Kogi Central as a pioneer in Nigeria’s clean mobility drive.
